The small details

Seats, bassinets, bags and documents for everyone.

03 / GET READY

Less last-minute stress

Use the checklist before paying and before flying.

THE FAMILY FLIGHT CHECKLIST

Six details. A smoother start.

Travelling with a baby, toddler or school-age children? These are the questions to settle before you confirm your tickets.

01

Choose the whole journey

Compare departure and arrival times, total travel time and the final family price. A nonstop flight avoids a connection where available; a connecting itinerary may offer a different balance of cost and timing.

Ask: one ticket or separate tickets? Are bags checked through? What happens after a delay?

02

Get every child’s age right

Give each child’s date of birth and flag birthdays during the trip, especially a second birthday. Confirm the correct ticket and seating arrangements in both directions.

Ask: lap infant or purchased seat? How many accompanying adults are required?

03

Plan seats & bassinets

Ask which seats are included, whether your family can sit together, and how to request a bassinet. Eligibility and availability depend on the operating airline.

Remember: a bassinet request is not a guarantee. Get airline approval for any child restraint used on board.

04

Count all the baggage

Check adult, child and infant allowances on every flight. Confirm how a pram, stroller or car seat will be carried, where to hand it over and where to collect it.

Ask: are there extra charges? Will you need to collect and recheck bags during transit?

05

Check everyone’s documents

Check passports, entry permission and transit requirements for each traveller’s nationality. For a child travelling with one parent or another adult, check any supporting-document requirements.

Use current official entry advice and recheck before departure.

06

Make arrival easier

Request meals and assistance by the airline’s deadline. Check baby-food and liquid rules. Plan your Colombo transfer, luggage space and a suitable child restraint.

Keep a change of clothes, essential items and transfer details accessible within cabin-baggage limits.
