FIND YOUR KIND OF SRI LANKA

Places to visit in Sri Lanka

Choose the stops that suit your interests, your travel season and the time you have. These nine destinations offer a starting point—not a list you need to finish.

Sigiriya rock fortress rising above the forest in Sri Lanka

ANCIENT CITIES

Sigiriya

Climb into the island’s past

Explore the UNESCO-listed Ancient City of Sigiriya, with its rock fortress, gardens and views over the surrounding landscape. It is a natural base for a Cultural Triangle stay. Allow time for the climb and choose a visiting time that suits the heat and your pace.

Kandy city and its green surrounding hills in Sri Lanka

CULTURE & LAKESIDE WALKS

Kandy

A cultural pause in the hills

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, walk beside Kandy Lake and leave time for the city’s cultural sights. Kandy pairs well with a Cultural Triangle trip or an onward hill-country stay. Dress respectfully at religious sites and follow the guidance at each entrance.

Nine Arch Bridge surrounded by green hills in Sri Lanka

HILL COUNTRY

Ella

Slow down among green hills

Ella is a base for the Nine Arch Bridge, tea-country scenery and walks such as Little Adam’s Peak. Balance sightseeing with time to enjoy the views. If a train journey is part of your plans, confirm current services, reservation options and onward transfers before fixing the rest of your route.

Historic coastal town of Galle in Sri Lanka

HERITAGE BY THE SEA

Galle

Wander the old fort streets

Galle’s UNESCO-listed old town and fortifications bring together historic streets, sea views, cafés and small shops. It is a good choice for travellers who want coastal time with plenty to explore on foot. Add nearby beach days if the season and sea conditions suit your plans.

Tropical coastline at Mirissa in Sri Lanka

SOUTH COAST

Mirissa

Make time for coastal days

Choose Mirissa for south-coast scenery, beach cafés and viewpoints such as Coconut Tree Hill. Beach and boat activities depend on the season and daily conditions. If you plan a wildlife boat trip, check operating conditions and choose an operator that follows responsible wildlife practices.

Surfers and coastline at Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka’s east coast

EAST COAST

Arugam Bay

Follow the surf east

Arugam Bay is an east-coast option for surf-focused travel and a relaxed coastal stay. Match the season to your trip and choose surf spots suited to your experience. Its location means it works best as a planned part of an eastern route rather than a quick detour from the south coast.

Green tea plantations in Sri Lanka’s hill country

TEA COUNTRY

Nuwara Eliya

Trade the coast for cooler hills

Tea estates, gardens and Lake Gregory make Nuwara Eliya a different side of Sri Lanka. Plan time for winding hill-country roads and pack a light layer for cooler conditions. It can be combined with Kandy or Ella, but a longer stay is easier than squeezing every hill town into a short trip.

Elephants on a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka

WILDLIFE

Yala National Park

Leave room for the wild

A safari around Yala adds a wildlife-focused stop to a southern itinerary. The park is associated with elephants, leopards and birdlife, but sightings are never guaranteed. Confirm park access and arrangements for your dates, choose a responsible operator and keep your route flexible.

Colombo waterfront and skyline near Galle Face Green

CITY & ARRIVAL

Colombo

Start with a taste of the city

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and a useful first or final stop. Explore Galle Face Green, food, markets and neighbourhood cafés, or use the city as a pause between flights and the rest of the island. Plan your airport transfer around your actual arrival time and luggage.

LET THE SEASON SHAPE THE ROUTE

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

There is no single best month for the whole island. Two monsoons affect different regions, so plan your coast and activities around the season, then check the forecast for your actual dates.

DECEMBER–FEBRUARY

Think south & west

Often a useful starting point for a south- or west-coast beach plan, while the northeast monsoon affects other parts of the island. Check local sea conditions before beach and boat activities.

MAY–SEPTEMBER

Consider the east

The southwest monsoon brings more rain to the southwest coast and hills. Eastern destinations such as Arugam Bay may fit this period better, depending on the activities you want to do.

MARCH–APRIL / OCTOBER–NOVEMBER

Keep plans flexible

These transition periods can bring showers and thunderstorms. Leave flexibility in your itinerary and check conditions before long transfers, outdoor visits and sea trips.

Sri Lanka itinerary ideas

These are suggested routes to personalise. Allow for travel days, arrival and departure times, weather and the pace of your group. Reverse the route or reduce stops when it makes the journey easier.

7 DAYS

Choose two regions

Colombo or airport area → Kandy → Galle or the south coast → departure

Keep a short trip simple. Combine a cultural stop with coastal time, or swap the coast for Sigiriya if heritage is your priority. Avoid trying to cover every major region.

10 DAYS

Culture, hills & coast

Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Galle or Mirissa → departure

A varied first-trip outline for travellers comfortable with several transfers. Use longer stays where possible and remove a stop if you want a slower holiday.

14 DAYS

Add time, not just stops

Colombo → Cultural Triangle → Kandy → hill country → optional safari → one coast → departure

Use the extra days for a fuller heritage stay, slower hill-country travel and a coastal finish. Choose the coast for the season; add Yala only if it works with access and your route.

THE PRACTICAL PART

Before you travel

A little planning helps your itinerary work on the ground. Confirm the essentials before locking in flights, hotels and transfers.

Documents & current advice

Check entry permission, passport validity and transit rules for each traveller. Use the official Sri Lanka ETA portal and Smartraveller for current entry and safety information. Confirm fees and eligibility before applying.

Transport & reservations

Decide where a driver, train or other transfer suits your route. Confirm current operations and reservation arrangements before relying on a specific service. Hill-country journeys and road transfers deserve space in the itinerary.

Budget & travelling style

Build your budget from dated quotes for flights, accommodation, transfers, attraction entry and activities. Include baggage and fare conditions when comparing flights. For families, choose fewer hotel changes and check room, seating and transfer arrangements in advance.

Pack for more than the beach

Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun and rain protection, a layer for the hills and clothing suitable for religious sites. Travelling with children? Use our family flight booking checklist.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Sri Lanka travel FAQs

Seven days suits a focused trip through a couple of regions. Ten to fourteen days gives more room for culture, hill country and a coastal stay. Choose fewer stops if you prefer a slower pace, and include travel days when planning.

The best time depends on the region. December to February is often useful for south- and west-coast plans, while May to September can suit eastern destinations. Transition months can bring showers. Check regional forecasts and current conditions before travelling.

Choose a few places that match your interests: Sigiriya and Kandy for heritage, Ella or Nuwara Eliya for hill country, and Galle, Mirissa or Arugam Bay for coastal time. Colombo can fit around your flights. Match the coast to your season and leave time for transfers.

A family itinerary can combine cultural visits, scenic stays and coastal time. Choose accommodation, transport and activities for your children’s ages, reduce hotel changes and check seating, baggage and transfer arrangements before booking.

Check the current visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation requirements for your passport and purpose of travel. Use the official Sri Lanka ETA portal and Smartraveller for current eligibility, fees and document requirements.

Start with your Australian departure city, travel dates and passenger details. Compare total journey time, baggage, connection arrangements and fare conditions. SkyCeylon’s city-to-Colombo guides can help you explore options before requesting a current quote.
